Team building exercises or games are designed to build rapport and establish teamwork amongst team members or co-workers, or simply as an opportunity to have fun being around each other. Over the years though, the concepts used for team building activities have changed significantly. One example of extreme activities being used for team building is parkour.
Despite the recent popularity of parkour, many are against the idea of using it for team building due to the risk posed by this type of activity. This is just one of many activities that are now being considered for team building. Some of those extreme activities include base jumping, ski tree jumping, and free falling. These activities surely aren’t for the weak of heart, but the real question is this: will it serve the purpose of team building?
Opting to incorporate parkour into your team building activity is completely up to the group. You have to draw the line between what is considered as mere recreation to something that will actually represent team building. Each company or team has their own mentality as to what consistitutes team building. But when an activity involves some level of risk, it is important that you understand what those risks are before you proceed.
Adrenaline junkies will surely find doing parkour and some of the abovementioned activities an ideal way to have their team building. But what about the others? Are all members of your team or company comfortable doing it? Will it put some risk to their safety, especially for those with a limited skill level when it comes to parkour? If you are only putting your own interest in mind at the risk of others, then you are already losing sight of what the essence of team building is about.
Make sure that everyone is agreeable to the concept before you proceed with it. Even though everyone in the team is as much of an adrenaline junkie as you are, do not proceed with your guards down. You need to always put the safety of the team before anything else.
The fun factor is always an integral part of any team building stimulation but you should NEVER put entertainment before reinforcing teamwork within your group. Rather, that should come as an after-effect of being able to organize an activity that will promote camaraderie, cooperation, and good spirits amongst each other.
